KUALA LUMPUR: There is a lack of awareness among the Indian community of the potential benefits they can receive from the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), the Prime Minister said.
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that although the Indians were supportive of the programme, they were not excited about it as they did not realise that they could benefit directly from the new jobs, business opportunities and better incomes that the ETP would bring.
“We need the help of Indian leaders and organisations to explain to the Indians how they can benefit,” he said in his speech at the 60th anniversary dinner of the Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI) here on Saturday night.
“Leaders of the Indian community have a duty to work with the government and bring the ETP to the people,” he said.
Najib also said that he would look into a request by MAICCI to increase opportunities for Indian businessmen in government-linked companies (GLC).
Also present at the event were his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel, Human Resources Minister Datuk S. Subramaniam and MAICCI president Datuk K.K. Eswaran.
