PETALING JAYA: The new executive committee of the Malaysian Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI) has identified six “core” themes and several new initiatives to keep the body relevant and more enterprising.

Datuk N. Gobalakrishnan, who is the new president, said the executive committee would transform the body with improvements in key areas such as its governance and transparency, as well as innovation.

He said intervention strategies to complement the government’s approach to resolving socio-economic issues among the Malaysian Indian B-40 community, as well promoting technical and vocational education and training (TVET), would also be given emphasis.

Gobalakrishnan, who defeated Tan Sri Kenneth Eswaran for the post during the MAICCI elections on Oct 20, said the body would also appoint an iconic female entrepreneur to chair the management council, adding that the economic potential of Malaysian Indian women would be part of its core empowerment programme.

As part of the strategy to recognise and promote excellence in the Malaysian Indian business community, he said the body would also come up with the MAICCI Annual Awards.

“These recognitions must become part of our culture. We must offer opportunities and platforms throughout the year,” he said.

The entire seven-member executive committee aligned with Eswaran were wiped out in the polls.

The new committee comprises eight members, who included Datuk R. Rajasekharan as deputy president, Datuk Dr A.T. Kumararajah as secretary-general and Sreekanth Sibastian as treasurer-general.
